4x4 Rear Square Number Plate

from £10.00
4x4 square number plates are rear plates measuring 279mm × 203mm (11" × 8"), with the registration set over two lines, for vehicles whose rear plate recess is square rather than long: Land Rover Defenders and other 4x4s, horse boxes, trailers, taxis and lorries. Any of our letter styles can go on them. Each plate is a reflective yellow BS AU 145e plate made in County Durham by a DVLA-registered number plate supplier, sold as a single rear plate. Order before 2pm on a working day with your documents approved and we make it the same day.
How it is made
The registration is split across two lines in Charles Wright characters at the size and spacing the rules prescribe for a two-line plate, on a reflective yellow plate carrying our supplier name, postcode and the BS AU 145e mark. The characters go on in the style you choose: printed, 3D gel, 4D 3mm, 4D 5mm, 4D gel, Outline, Hover, Shadow or Retro. A square plate is also suitable as a number plate for trailer use, displaying the towing vehicle's registration on the trailer; our post on trailer registration plates explains when a trailer needs its own registration as well.
Is it road legal?
Yes, when the finished plate meets BS AU 145e and the number plate regulations, which allow the registration to be shown on two lines at the prescribed character size and spacing. Every square plate we make meets both: Charles Wright characters, a single shade of non-reflective black, a reflective yellow background with no tint or pattern, and a registered supplier's mark. Our guide to 3D and 4D number plate legality explains what the standard measures.
Other sizes
For a wide rear plate rather than a square one, see the oversize rear plate (535mm × 152mm). The front plate for the same vehicle is usually a standard 520mm × 111mm plate. For bikes and quads, see the 4D motorbike plate, 3D gel motorbike plate and printed motorbike plate.
Warranty
36 months against manufacturing defects, which covers the plate, the print and the bond between character and plate. It does not cover damage from fitting, impact or chemicals.

Yes. A trailer shows the registration of the vehicle towing it, and a square plate suits the square recess on most trailers and horse boxes. Some trailers also need a registration of their own; our guide to trailer registration plates explains when.
Usually not. Most vehicles with a square rear recess take a standard 520mm × 111mm plate at the front. In the plate builder, choose 4x4 square as the rear size and add a standard front plate, or order the square plate on its own.
Measure the rear recess first. If it is square, about 279mm × 203mm (11 x 8 inches), this is the plate. If it is wide rather than square, you need an oversize rear plate instead.
Order before 2pm on a working day with your documents approved and we make them the same day. Delivery options and times are in our FAQ, and the documents we can accept are on our valid documents page.
