Yes. All number plates supplied by Utopia Plates are manufactured in accordance with current UK regulations and the relevant British Standard at the time of manufacture.
We are a DVLA Registered Number Plate Supplier (RNPS) and only produce plates that meet legal requirements for size, font, spacing, reflectivity, and materials. Every order is made using compliant components and checked before dispatch.
If you’re ever unsure whether a specific style is suitable for your vehicle, our team is always happy to advise before you order.
Utopia Plates does not sell show plates, as they could be used on the road, even though the manufacturer may sell them on the basis that they will not be. For this reason, it is illegal for a Registered Number Plate Supplier to produce any number plates featuring a legitimate registration if they do not conform to the British Standard for number plates. As such, we will not sell show plates (this includes tinted plates, blank plates or those with non-standard spacing). We will only produce fully road legal plates, with standard spacing (as it appears on your V5C).
No, this is not road legal. The centre of the number plates must feature the company name and postcode of the manufacturer for them to conform to the British Standard. We cannot print your name or any other slogan in this space.
Our warranty policy provides a 36-month cover for any manufacturing or material defects in your number plates. This includes issues like water getting between the reflective and acrylic layers, delamination, or loss of lettering that wasn't caused by damage. For a more extensive protection, we suggest you look at our Accidental Damage Cover. This policy gives you two (2) like-for-like replacement number plates if they're accidentally damaged, and this cover lasts for 2 years from your purchase date.
Your dispatch time for number plates varies depending on your specific order.
If you've ordered a private registration from us, we dispatch your number plates as soon as we receive the V750 Certificate of Entitlement from the DVLA, unless you've requested a different arrangement.
For orders involving only number plates, without a private registration, we typically dispatch the plates on the same day we receive your proof of address and proof of entitlement documents. While this isn't a guarantee, we're proud to say that our service is very quick.
Yes, you can cancel your order, however, it's important to note that we have a cancellation policy in place.
For number plates, you have the right to cancel from the moment the order is placed, until either the manufacturing process begins or 90 days have elapsed.
For private registration orders, cancellations must be made within 30 minutes of placing the order. A cancellation fee equivalent to the Administration Fee on the order will be deducted from your refund. Please note that due to the bespoke nature of these orders, the 30-minute window for cancellations is strictly adhered to.
We strive to process your refund promptly upon cancellation. However, any order cancellations should be communicated to us as soon as possible by contacting our customer service team via email or phone. We're here to assist and ensure your experience with Utopia Plates is as seamless as possible!
Number plate maker: design your plates online
Our number plate maker lets you design road-legal plates online and check them in a live 3D preview before you buy, so it works as a number plate viewer and visualiser too. Choose printed, 3D gel or one of our 4D styles, add a legal flag or border, and pick your size: standard, short, hex, square, oversize, JDM or motorbike. A standard pair starts at £34.99 for printed plates, £39.99 for 3D gel and £49.99 for 4D 3mm. Every plate is built to BS AU 145e at our workshop in County Durham, for delivery or collection.
Experience the Ultimate Upgrade: 3D and 4D Number Plates
Our exclusive range of 3D and 4D number plates is more than just a legal requirement; it's an expression of your style. Whether you need stylish replacement number plates or are upgrading for the first time, our user-friendly plate builder makes crafting your bespoke number plate easier than ever.
3D vs 4D Number Plates: What’s the Difference?
A common question we get is, "What's the difference between 3D vs 4D number plates?" We're here to clarify:
- 3D Number Plates: These feature characters made from a hard-wearing gel resin, giving a raised, glossy, and rounded profile. They are subtle yet premium.
- 4D Number Plates: These use precision laser-cut acrylic characters that are 3mm or 5mm thick, creating a sharper, more defined "popped out" effect. Our most popular choice, 4D 5mm plates, offer a bold and dramatic statement.
At Utopia Plates, we specialise in both high-quality 3D Gel plates and legally compliant 4D plates that are guaranteed to make your vehicle stand out.
A Style for Every Vehicle: Short, Hex, JDM & More
Our interactive plate builder is a game-changer. Making a number plate is no longer a tedious process, but an exciting journey. We cater to all tastes and vehicles:
- Short Plates: For a clean, compact look, our short plates are custom-cut to the specific length of your registration, ensuring a perfect, even margin.
- Hex Plates: The ultimate modern touch for performance and luxury cars. Our hexagonal plates, often called Hex plates, are perfect for Lamborghini, Audi, and other supercars.
- JDM Plates: We offer Japanese-import style JDM Plates, sized at 330mm x 178mm, to give your vehicle that authentic Japanese Domestic Market aesthetic.
- Range Rover Number Plates: Our 535mm x 152mm oversize number plates are a perfect fit for any vehicle, providing a premium finish that complements the luxury of makes like Range Rover and Bentley.
Find Your Perfect Private Registration
Looking for something truly unique? Use our search tool to find the perfect private registration. With a database of over 74 million DVLA registrations available for sale today, you can find and purchase a one-of-a-kind private plate that only you are entitled to use.
Number Plate Sizes & Quality
The standard UK size for number plates is 520mm x 111mm. Please note this will vary if you opt for our popular short plates option. Unlike competitors who use pre-made sizes, we cut your plates to match your registration, leaving a clean, even 16mm margin on all edges. Legally, your number plates cannot have a margin smaller than 11mm.
Legality You Can Trust
Everything produced by Utopia Plates is fully road legal and compliant with the British Standard (BS AU 145e). By law, we include our company name, postcode, and BS AU number discreetly on the plate. The font is the legal UK 'Charles Wright' style. Our guide to 3D and 4D number plate legality covers the current standard and the proposed changes to it. For your peace of mind, we also include a conveniently sized Certificate of Legality with every number plate purchase.
Show Plates
Utopia Plates does not sell show plates. To ensure all our products can be used legally on UK roads, we only produce fully road-legal replacement number plates with standard spacing as it appears on your V5C, V750 or V778 document. We do not produce tinted plates, blank plates, or those with non-standard spacing.
Legal Document Requirements
When you buy number plates online, the rules for registered number plate suppliers mean we have to see your documents: one proving your name and address, and one proving your entitlement to the registration. A document issued digitally, such as a paperless utility bill, a bank statement or an eV948, can be emailed in its original digital form. Anything that came on paper is posted to us or brought in as the original, never a photo or scan. The page after checkout explains the next step, and we return your documents with your plates by Royal Mail Tracked.
Warranty
All of our plates come with a 36-month warranty covering manufacturing defects or natural issues. This does not cover customer-inflicted damage. Please contact us via email or our contact page to discuss a warranty claim. When ordering your number plates, you also have the opportunity to purchase our optional Number Plate Protection Plan which covers all damage, loss and theft for 2 years.
