Private Plates: Personalise Your Vehicle with Unique Registrations

A private plate is a registration you buy and then assign to your vehicle in place of the one it was issued with. You choose the combination, and the £80 DVLA fee is included in the price you pay, after which the registration stays yours: you can move it to your next car, or take it off and hold it for later. What a private plate costs

The cheapest registration we sell is £250. That price includes the £80 DVLA transfer fee and VAT; our admin fee and the number plates themselves are not included. Prices then run in tiers — £399, £499, £599, £699, £799, £899, £999, £1,299 and upwards — depending on how sought after the combination is. If your budget is tighter, we list registrations under £500 separately. Number plates are ordered alongside the registration and start at £29.99 for a pair of printed plates.

The number plate formats explained

Every registration belongs to one of a handful of formats, and the format tells you whether the plate carries an age identifier.

• Dateless: issued between 1904 and 1962, with no age identifier at all.
• Suffix: issued between 1963 and 1982, where the final letter shows the vehicle's age.
• Prefix: issued between 1982 and 2001, where the first character shows the age.
• Current style: adopted in 2001, with an area code followed by an age identifier.
• Irish: dateless in format, and used to disguise the age of a vehicle.

Which registrations you can put on your vehicle

You cannot make a vehicle look newer than it is, so a registration with a later age identifier cannot go on an older car. Dateless and Irish registrations carry no age identifier, which is why they are used to disguise a vehicle's age. The vehicle also has to be taxed and MOT'd before the DVLA will accept an assignment.

How buying and assigning works

1. Find the registration: search by a name, initials, a date or your vehicle model, and sort the results by price.
2. Buy it: pay online, including the £80 DVLA transfer fee that every private registration carries.
3. Assign it to your vehicle: apply through the DVLA's online service, which is open from 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 8pm at weekends, or by post when the DVLA will not allow an online assignment. You need your V5C logbook and either the V750 Certificate of Entitlement or the V778 Retention Document for the registration.
4. Order your plates: choose a style in our plate builder, from printed plates to 3D gel number plates and 4D plates, all built to the British Standard, BS AU 145e.

Let us handle the paperwork

If you would rather not deal with the forms, our Done-For-You Paperwork Service applies the registration for you. You send a photograph of your current V5C logbook, and our admin team completes the application and deals with the DVLA on your behalf. It covers the paperwork only: the registration itself and the physical plates are ordered separately.

Taking a registration off a vehicle

Retaining a registration means taking it off your vehicle and keeping it for later, which is what most people do when they sell a car but want to keep the plate. The vehicle needs a valid MOT and must be taxed or have a SORN in place, you need the V5C, and the DVLA charges £80. Our guide to retaining a private registration sets out each step.

Private plate FAQs

Can I buy a private plate as a gift? Yes. A registration can be bought and held on a V750 Certificate of Entitlement until it is assigned, so it does not have to go straight onto a car.

How long does an assignment take? The DVLA's online service can confirm an assignment instantly, or within a few days. If the DVLA will not let you assign online, the application has to go by post instead.
