Can I buy someone number plates as a gift?

As we draw ever closer to Christmas, we’ve been receiving a lot of messages asking if it’s possible to purchase 3D gel or 4D laser cut number plates as a Christmas present. The short answer, is yes!

Current UK law requires a Registered Number Plate Supplier to see one form of identification/proof of address, and one document proving entitlement to the registration, before they can produce any number plates. Recording those details is what stops plates being made up for someone cloning another vehicle. Your proof of identity and address has to be in your name, but the document proving entitlement to the registration can be in someone else’s, which is what makes buying plates as a gift possible.

This means that if you wanted to, for example, purchase a set of our 4D 5mm number plates for someone, you could provide your own ID/proof of address document along with the proof of entitlement to the registration, which would typically be held in the recipients name. To further elaborate, we could accept your own driving licence or utility bill, but the V5C logbook or V750 certificate of entitlement belonging to the person you’re treating to a set of plates.

While it can be tricky to get your hands on the proof of entitlement to the registration without your gift recipient knowing, this is a legal requirement and not something we can work without.

If you cannot get hold of the entitlement document before the big day without giving the surprise away, you can still place the order: we make the plates once we have seen the documents, so the recipient can send theirs over afterwards.

There is a comprehensive list of documents which we can accept, you might find some are easier to get than others, so be sure to check out the full list if you’re thinking of buying number plates as a gift.
