A personalised number plate starts at £250 from us, and that price already includes the £80 DVLA fee and VAT. Above that, registrations run in tiers to £1,299 and beyond, priced on how sought after the combination is. The plates themselves are separate and start at £29.99 for a pair. What a registration costs

The most affordable non-preowned private registration from Utopia Plates costs £250. That price includes the £80 DVLA fee and VAT; our admin fee and the cost of having the number plates made up are not included.

Prices then run in tiers: £250, £399, £499, £599, £699, £799, £899, £999, £1,299 and upwards. What moves a registration up the ladder is demand rather than length. A combination that reads as a name, a word or a set of initials is worth more than a random one, short registrations are worth more than long ones, and anything that spells something people want on a car sits at the top.

A registration can never make a vehicle look newer than it is, which is the one rule that limits what you can buy. A 2015 car can wear an older registration but not a 2020 one, so the age of the vehicle narrows the list before price does.

What you pay for, line by line

The registration itself is the tiered price above. On top of that:

• The £80 DVLA fee: already inside the price when you buy a registration from us or from the DVLA. You pay it again only if you later take the registration off a vehicle to keep it on retention. Putting a registration you already hold onto a car costs nothing.
• Our admin fee: charged on top of the registration price, and shown before you pay.
• VAT: included in the prices shown on the site.
• Number plates: optional, from £29.99 for a pair of standard printed plates, more for 3D gel and 4D styles.

Two optional extras people often add:

• The Done-For-You Paperwork Service, from £24.99, where our admin team applies the registration to the vehicle for you.
• A presentation certificate, posted in a card envelope, if the registration is a gift.

Buying from us or from the DVLA

The DVLA sells registrations that have never been issued, and its prices are inclusive of VAT and the £80 fee in the same way ours are. What it does not sell is anything already owned by someone else, which is most of the memorable combinations: those change hands on the private market. That is the practical difference between the two, rather than price.

A pre-owned registration comes with a V750 certificate or a V778 retention document from its current holder, and the £80 on that registration was paid when it was first bought or last retained. Buying one does not trigger the fee again.

What it costs to get it on the car

Assigning a registration to a vehicle is free, whether you do it online or by post, and you need the V5C log book along with the V750 or V778. If you would rather not deal with the DVLA yourself, that is what the paperwork service is for.

Then the plates. A registered number plate supplier has to see proof of who you are and where you live, plus the document proving your entitlement to the registration, before the plates can be made. The documents we accept sets out what counts and how to get it to us.

Spreading the cost

You can spread the cost with Klarna, Clearpay or PayPal. Buy Now, Pay Later is credit provided by those lenders rather than by Utopia Plates, and is interest-free when you pay on time, subject to status.

Common questions

Is the £80 refundable? If you hold the right to a registration and decide never to put it on a vehicle, you can give up that right and apply to the DVLA for a refund of the £80.

Do I pay again when I move the plate to my next car? Taking it off the old car costs £80. Putting it on the new one is free. Moving a registration between two cars you own is therefore one fee, not two.

Is a cheap registration worth less later? Not necessarily, but treat a private registration as something you buy because you want it rather than as an investment. What it sells for depends on whether anyone else wants that exact combination.
